Carpentry Hack: How to Make Finger Joints

Finger joints (also called box joints) are interlocking rectangular cuts that create strong, attractive connections for boxes, drawers, and frames. This method is ideal for learners and DIYers who want durable joints without complex tools.

    Materials & Tools Needed

    • Two wooden pieces (same thickness)
    • Pencil and ruler
    • Saw (preferably a table saw or hand saw with a jig)
    • Chisel and mallet (for cleanup)
    • Wood glue
    • Clamps

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Mark the Joint Fingers
      • Decide the width of each finger (e.g., 10mm).
      • Use a ruler and pencil to mark alternating fingers on both wood pieces.
      • Ensure the layout is mirrored so the fingers interlock.
    2. Cut the Fingers
      • Use a saw to cut along the marked lines.
      • Remove the waste material between fingers using a chisel.
      • Test fit the joint—fingers should slide snugly into each other.
    3. Dry Fit and Adjust
      • Check alignment and fit.
      • Trim or sand any tight spots for a smooth interlock.
    4. Apply Glue and Clamp
      • Spread wood glue on the fingers.
      • Assemble the joint and clamp tightly.
      • Wipe off excess glue and let it dry.
    5. Finish the Joint
    • Sand the surface flush.
    • Optionally, apply wood filler for gaps and finish with paint or varnish.
